Recruiters write them thinking about what problems they need to solve. Reading a job description with that second mindset, the problem-solver’s mindset, dramatically changes which parts you pay attention to and how you tailor your resume.

Table of Contents

Toggle

The order of requirements tells you what matters most

The difference between responsibilities and requirements

Code words that signal what the company culture values

What “preferred” The first three to five bullet points under “Responsibilities” or “Requirements” are almost always the core of what the hiring manager actually needs. What comes later is often aspirational or nice-to-have.

When tailoring your resume, start by addressing those top requirements. Make sure your experience clearly speaks to each one in a way that is easy to find in the first skim. The things that appear late in a long list of requirements matter less and need less emphasis.

This is especially true for technical requirements. When “5+ years of Python experience” appears first, it is non-negotiable. When “familiarity with Tableau” appears fifteenth in a list, it is a preference. Your resume should reflect that hierarchy.

The difference between responsibilities and requirements

Responsibilities describe what you will do in the role. Requirements describe what you need to bring to do it. Most candidates scan both but treat them equally. They are not equal.

Requirements are the filter. If you do not meet the stated requirements, especially the ones listed as required versus preferred, your application is unlikely to advance regardless of how strong your other experience is. Read requirements carefully and honestly assess your fit before investing time in tailoring.

Responsibilities are where you find the story you need to tell. Look at the responsibilities and ask yourself: where in my history have I done something similar? How did it go? What resulted? The answers to those questions are the content your customized resume should feature prominently.

Code words that signal what the company culture values

Job descriptions often contain language that signals what the company culture prioritizes. “Fast-paced environment” means things move quickly and are sometimes chaotic. “Cross-functional collaboration” means you will work with many teams and need to influence without authority. “Self-starter” means there is not a lot of structure or hand-holding.

These signals tell you two things. First, whether this environment is actually a fit for how you work. Second, what evidence from your past to emphasize in your resume. If a company signals they value independent problem-solving, your examples of initiative and ownership belong near the top.

Some companies signal culture through the language of the description itself. A formal, bullet-heavy description suggests a more corporate environment. A conversational description with personality suggests a different culture. Your cover letter tone should match, and so should the way you frame your experience.

What “preferred” really means

Requirements labeled as “preferred” or “nice-to-have” are genuinely optional in most cases. Missing a preferred requirement rarely disqualifies a candidate. Meeting all the required requirements, combined with strong evidence of accomplishment, is usually more than enough.

Where candidates make mistakes is in avoiding applications when they meet all required qualifications but miss one preferred one. Apply anyway. Where they make the opposite mistake is in spending significant resume real estate addressing preferred requirements that the recruiter cares about very little.

Prioritize required requirements in your customization. Address preferred ones where you genuinely meet them and where they fit naturally. Do not manufacture qualifications you do not have and do not stress about what you cannot honestly claim.

How to use the company context beyond the job posting

The job description is a starting point, not the full picture. Look at the company’s LinkedIn page to see what they emphasize about their culture and mission. Look at the profiles of people currently in similar roles to understand what kind of backgrounds tend to succeed there. Read recent news about the company to understand their current priorities.

All of this context informs how you frame your experience. If the company is in rapid growth mode, your examples of scaling systems or teams become more relevant. If they are focused on efficiency and cost management, your examples of process improvement and resource optimization matter more.

This research also prepares you for interviews. The candidates who get offers are usually the ones who demonstrate that they understand the company’s situation and have thought about how their experience is relevant to that specific context.

Read next

How to Work With a Recruiter to Find Your Next Job

How AI Resume Builders Compare to Human Resume Review

How to Write a Job Application Email That Gets Read

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a recruiter spend looking at a resume?

Recruiters typically spend 6-10 seconds on an initial scan.
