first

Before anything else, a nurse manager scanning your resume is checking three things: Do you have the right license and certifications for this unit? Do you have relevant clinical experience? Are there any red flags like unexplained gaps or a history of very short stays at multiple hospitals? Everything else on the page is secondary to those three checks.

That means your license, specialty certifications (CCRN, CEN, CNOR, etc.), and your most relevant unit experience need to be immediately visible, not buried in the middle of a dense paragraph.

The right format for a nursing resume

Use a reverse-chronological format with a clear summary at the top. Your certifications and licenses should have their own section, clearly labeled, near the top of the page. Do not put them at the bottom where the eye never lands during a quick scan.

For each role, include the hospital or facility name, your unit (ICU, ED, Med-Surg, etc.), your employment type (staff, per diem, travel), your shift, your patient-to-nurse ratio, and the bed count or unit volume where relevant. Nurse managers want that context. It tells them instantly whether your experience translates to their floor.

How to write strong nursing resume bullets

Most nursing bullets are passive and vague. “Provided patient care in a fast-paced environment” describes approximately every nurse who has ever worked. You need to be specific. Here is what specificity looks like in nursing bullets:

Managed a 1:2 patient ratio in a 20-bed MICU, providing care for patients on mechanical ventilation, CRRT, and vasoactive drips

Served as charge nurse for 12-hour overnight shifts, coordinating care for 18 patients across six nurses and two CNAs

Trained four new graduate nurses over six months as part of the unit orientation program, resulting in all four passing the six-month competency review

Participated in a quality improvement initiative that reduced CAUTI rates by 30% through revised catheter care protocols

Notice that each bullet says what you actually did, how complex it was, and (where applicable) what it produced. You are not just listing duties; you are showing clinical judgment and impact.

Certifications and licenses: what to include and how

Your certifications section should include your state RN license (include license number and expiration date), BLS, ACLS if applicable, any specialty certifications, and any IV therapy, moderate sedation, or other relevant competencies. If you are applying in a new state, note your compact license status or your pending licensure application.

Do not just list “BLS certified.” Include the issuing organization and expiration date. Nurse managers and HR departments verify these. Make it easy for them.

Handling travel nursing experience on your resume

Travel nursing looks like job hopping to someone who does not understand it. Clarify it upfront. You can add “(Travel)” next to the agency name or facility name, or add a note at the top of your experience section that says “All positions marked (T) are travel contracts.” This one small addition prevents a very common misread.

The nursing resume summary section

Your summary should be two to three sentences that tell the reader your specialty, your years of experience, and your clinical strengths. Example: “ICU-trained RN with six years in cardiac and neurological critical care. Experienced with vented patients, hemodynamic monitoring, and charge responsibilities. Seeking a level II trauma center role where I can continue developing as a clinical resource for newer nurses.”

That summary tells me your specialty, your experience level, what you are comfortable with clinically, and what you are looking for. That is all a summary needs to do.

New grad nurse resume tips

If you are a new graduate nurse, your clinical rotations are your experience. List each rotation with the unit type, facility, and the types of patients or procedures you were exposed to. Include your capstone experience prominently. Add any leadership roles from nursing school, volunteer work in clinical settings, or CNA experience. Do not apologize for being new; frame your rotations as what they are, real clinical experience in supervised environments.

Keywords that matter for nursing ATS filters

For nursing applications, common ATS keywords include: RN, registered nurse, patient care, electronic health records, Epic, Cerner, Meditech, medication administration, care coordination, discharge planning, patient education, wound care, IV therapy, triage, and your specialty area terms (ICU, ED, OR, L and D, NICU, etc.). Work them in naturally, not as a keyword dump.

Read next

Nurse Resume Guide: How to Write a Resume That Gets RN Interviews

How to Tailor Your Resume for a Customer Success Manager Role

How to Tailor Your Resume for a Financial Analyst Role

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a recruiter spend looking at a resume?

Recruiters typically spend 6-10 seconds on an initial scan.
