It does not tell me you know how to use them. Every engineer lists technologies. What differentiates you is showing what you built with them, at what scale, and what problem it solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_format_your_engineering_resume\"><\/span>How to format your engineering resume<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep it clean and ATS-friendly. That means a single-column layout or a simple two-column layout, no graphics, no unusual fonts, and no tables that ATS systems misread. Use standard section headers: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, Projects (optional). Your most important content should be in the top half of the first page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One page for engineers with fewer than seven years of experience. Two pages for senior engineers and architects. Here are examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rebuilt the payment processing pipeline in Java, reducing average transaction latency from 340ms to 80ms and eliminating a category of race conditions that caused $40K per month in failed charges<\/li><li>Migrated a monolithic Rails application to microservices on AWS ECS, enabling the team to deploy independently and reducing release cycle time from four weeks to three days<\/li><li>Designed and implemented a Kafka-based event streaming architecture that handled 4 million events per day with 99.97% delivery reliability<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each bullet names the technology, tells me what scale it operated at, and tells me what improved because of your work. Use categories like: Languages, Frameworks and Libraries, Infrastructure and Cloud, Databases, Tools and Platforms. This makes the section scannable and shows that you think in organized systems, which is actually a signal about how you code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only list things you can discuss in an interview. If you list Rust because you completed a tutorial once, you will get caught when a senior engineer asks you about lifetimes and borrowing. For each project, include the tech stack, what the project does in one sentence, any real-world usage metrics (users, requests per day, etc.), and a link to the GitHub repo or live demo if available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your projects section is just tutorial projects you did while learning, leave it off. Those are the things you should highlight in your bullets if you have experience with them. If the company mentions &#8220;high-throughput distributed systems&#8221; five times, make sure your most relevant distributed systems work is near the top of your experience section and written in that language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also pay attention to what the company builds. A fintech company will care about reliability, security, and compliance. A startup will care about shipping speed and versatility. A FAANG will care about scale. Do not link to a GitHub account with repositories you started three years ago and never updated.
