recruiter

What the interviewer is actually trying to learn

When an interviewer asks why you are leaving, they are trying to answer several questions at once. Are you leaving because of a performance issue or conflict? Are you someone who leaves the moment things get hard? Do you have a clear sense of what you are looking for or are you just looking to escape?

They are also assessing cultural fit. Someone who leaves because they need more autonomy than their current role provides is signaling something about how they like to work. Someone who leaves because they want to move into management is signaling ambition and direction. These signals help the interviewer decide whether you will thrive in their environment.

Understanding what they are trying to learn helps you give an answer that addresses their concerns directly rather than giving a vague non-answer that raises more questions than it resolves.

Answers that work: framed around growth and fit

The most effective answers frame your departure around what you are moving toward rather than what you are leaving behind. “I have learned a lot at my current company, and I am looking for an opportunity to take on more strategic responsibility” is far stronger than “my manager does not appreciate my contributions.”

Even if the real reason you are leaving involves difficult circumstances, conflict, or dissatisfaction, you can usually find a truthful version of the story that emphasizes what you are looking for rather than what you are escaping. “I am looking for a role where I can own a larger scope of work” is true and forward-looking even if the deeper truth is that your current role has become frustrating.

Specific and forward-looking answers also work well: “I have been at my current company for four years and feel like I have grown as much as this role allows. I am looking for a team where I can build something more significant.”

What not to say and why

Do not speak negatively about your current employer, manager, or colleagues. Even if your complaints are completely legitimate, negative talk about a previous employer is one of the most reliable ways to damage your candidacy. It raises questions about whether you will do the same about this company.

Do not mention compensation as the primary reason, even if it is true. “I am looking for a higher salary” is not a compelling reason for a company to hire you over other candidates. Compensation can be a factor in your decision, but it should not be the headline.

Avoid vague answers that suggest lack of direction. “I am just looking for a new challenge” by itself sounds unfocused. Pair any mention of wanting a new challenge with something specific about the kind of challenge you are looking for and why you think this role provides it.

How to handle tough situations

If you were laid off, say so clearly and without embarrassment. Layoffs are common, especially in volatile industries. “My position was eliminated in a company-wide restructuring” is the complete answer. You do not need to explain more unless they ask. Most interviewers will not press further.

If you left under difficult circumstances, perhaps a conflict with a manager or a performance issue, prepare a version of the story that is honest but constructive. What did you learn? How has your approach changed? What are you looking for that would be different in your next role?

If you are leaving a toxic situation, you do not have to say that directly. “The culture was not a good fit for how I work” is honest and much less alarming than details about the dysfunction. Focus on what a better environment looks like for you and connect that to why this company is interesting.

Closing the answer with forward momentum

The best versions of this answer end with something specific about the opportunity you are interviewing for. Not just “I am excited about new challenges” but “I am specifically excited about this role because it gives me the opportunity to build a team, which is the area I have been developing toward in my current work.”

This pivot to the forward-looking part of your answer accomplishes two things. It shows you have done your research on the role. And it pivots the conversation away from your departure and toward the value you would bring, which is a much more productive place for both parties to spend time.

Practice this answer until it feels natural. “Why are you leaving?” is one of those questions where sounding rehearsed is actually fine, because interviewers expect you to have a prepared answer. What they do not want is a long pause followed by an answer that feels unexamined.

Read next

How to Answer “Why Are You Leaving Your Current Job”

How to Use a Job Offer to Negotiate a Raise at Your Current Job

How to Answer ‘Tell Me About Yourself’ in a Job Interview

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the STAR method?

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result.
