Sales is the one profession where your resume is also a sample of your work. If you cannot sell yourself on the page, a sales manager is going to wonder how you will sell their product to a customer. That does not mean you need to be flashy or clever. It means you need to be clear, specific, and numbers-forward. Numbers are the language of sales hiring.

<div resume

What sales hiring managers look for immediately

Every sales manager reading your resume is asking the same question: Can this person hit quota? Everything else is secondary. That means your quota attainment history needs to be the most prominent thing on your resume. If you hit 130% of quota three years in a row, that should be impossible to miss on the page. If you have never missed quota, say so explicitly.

After quota attainment, sales managers look at the type of sale you have done (inbound vs. outbound, SMB vs. enterprise, transactional vs. complex), your average deal size, your sales cycle length, and your territory or industry. These four factors tell a sales manager whether your background translates to their team.

The most important number on your sales resume

Quota attainment percentage. Every single role you list should have it. “Consistently exceeded quota” is meaningless without a number. “117% of quota” means something. “Ranked 2nd out of 28 reps in the Western region” means something. Give actual numbers and give them for every role, every year if possible.

How to write your experience bullets

Sales resume bullets should be short, specific, and loaded with context. Here is what strong sales bullets look like:

Closed $2.4M in new ARR in fiscal year 2024, achieving 134% of $1.8M quota as the top rep on a 12-person enterprise team

Sourced and closed seven-figure deals with three Fortune 500 clients through a combination of executive outreach and product-led trials, with an average sales cycle of 90 days

Rebuilt a neglected territory from $300K in annual revenue to $1.1M in 18 months by reactivating dormant accounts and launching a new outbound sequence targeting VP-level buyers

Every bullet has an outcome, a number, and context that shows what kind of sale it was. If you cannot add numbers to a bullet, ask yourself why you are including it.

How to present quota attainment across multiple years

If you have multiple years at the same company, you can list your highest quota attainment number in the header for the role and then break out individual year performance in your bullets. This gives the reader both the summary view and the detail they need to evaluate your consistency.

If you had a bad year, do not hide it with vague language. “118%, 127%, 94%, 109% of quota across four years” is honest and still strong. Sales managers know that everyone has a tough year. A resume with no bad numbers at all is actually a flag, not a strength, because it suggests you are either cherry-picking or being dishonest.

The summary section for sales resumes

Your summary should answer: What do you sell, what is your track record, and what makes you good at it. Example: “SaaS account executive with six years selling productivity and workflow tools to mid-market and enterprise buyers. Averaged 122% of quota across four consecutive years. Known for building senior executive relationships and navigating complex multi-stakeholder deals.”

Common sales resume mistakes

The most common mistakes are: no quota numbers (or vague quota language), listing responsibilities instead of outcomes, using passive voice (“was responsible for”) instead of active voice (“grew,” “closed,” “sourced”), and burying the most impressive numbers at the bottom of a bullet or role section. Put your best number first. Sales managers read top to bottom and lose interest quickly.

Tailoring for SDR, AE, and enterprise roles

For SDR or BDR roles, emphasize pipeline generation, outbound sequences, meetings booked, and conversion rates from cold outreach to discovery call. For AE roles, emphasize quota attainment, deal size, sales cycle, and close rate. For enterprise roles, emphasize deal complexity, stakeholder management, executive relationships, and contract value. The same experience can be framed very differently depending on which role you are targeting.

Read next

Sales Resume Guide: How to Write a Resume That Proves You Can Close

How to Tailor Your Resume for a Customer Success Manager Role

How to Tailor Your Resume for a Financial Analyst Role

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a recruiter spend looking at a resume?

Recruiters typically spend 6-10 seconds on an initial scan.
