matter as much as your answers

The end-of-interview question period is not a formality. Interviewers pay attention to what candidates ask, and experienced hiring managers often draw meaningful conclusions from it. Questions that are thoughtful, specific, and forward-looking signal that you are a serious candidate who has done their homework.

Questions that are generic, focused primarily on your own benefits, or that suggest you have not listened to the conversation, send the opposite signal. ‘What is the company culture like?’ after a conversation that covered culture extensively suggests you were not fully present.

The best questions do two things simultaneously: they give you information you genuinely need to make a good decision, and they demonstrate your understanding of the role, the team, and the challenges the organization is facing.

Questions about the role itself

What does success look like for this role in the first 90 days? This question is specific, forward-looking, and shows that you are already thinking about how you would add value. The answer also tells you exactly what the hiring manager is prioritizing, which is information you can use throughout the rest of the process.

What are the biggest challenges facing the team right now that this role will help address? This question shows strategic thinking and positions you as someone who understands that every hire is made to solve a problem. The answer gives you context for whether your skills are the right fit.

How has this role evolved in the past year? This tells you whether the role is growing, shrinking, or changing direction. It also tells you something about how the organization is evolving and whether you are walking into a role with momentum or one in flux.

Questions about the team and manager

How would you describe the team dynamic? What makes the team work well together, and what are the areas where it is still developing? This shows you care about the environment you are stepping into, not just the job description.

How would you describe your management style? In what types of situations do you step in more directly versus give team members autonomy? This question gives you valuable information about what it would actually be like to work for this person. It also opens a genuine conversation rather than a one-directional interview.

What do you enjoy most about working on this team? This is a good question to ask at any stage. It reveals something personal about the interviewer’s experience and often surfaces information about the team culture that would not otherwise come up.

Questions about growth and development

What does a typical career path look like for someone in this role? This is a reasonable and expected question for most roles. The answer tells you whether there is a clear trajectory and whether the company invests in the development of its people.

Are there opportunities to take on responsibilities beyond this role’s current scope? This positions you as someone who is thinking about growth, not just completing tasks. It also helps you understand whether the role has room to expand over time.

What kind of professional development and learning opportunities does the company support? This is a legitimate question that gives you useful information and signals that you care about continuing to grow. It is also a softer way to understand the company’s investment in its employees.

Questions to avoid

Do not ask about salary, benefits, vacation, or remote work policy in the first interview. Those are important questions, but they belong in later conversations or once you have an offer. Asking too early signals that you are primarily interested in the package, not the work.

Do not ask questions whose answers are clearly available on the company website. ‘What does your company do?’ or ‘How long have you been in business?’ suggests you did not prepare, and preparation is one of the clearest signals of genuine interest.

Do not ask leading questions that create pressure on the interviewer. ‘When can I expect to hear back?’ is fine. ‘Am I going to get an offer?’ is not. Keep your questions curious and genuine rather than transactional.

How many questions should you ask

Three to five questions is a good target. That is enough to show genuine engagement without taking more of the interviewer’s time than is appropriate. If you are in a panel interview with multiple people, you can ask more.

Have more questions prepared than you plan to use. Some of them will be answered during the conversation, and you will want options so you are not asking something that was already covered.

If the conversation was long and you are genuinely short on time, saying ‘I had more questions but I do not want to take more of your time. Would you be open to answering a few by email?’ is a graceful and professional close that keeps the connection going.

Get your free resume review from a real recruiter

All of this advice is based on years of reviewing resumes and working with hiring managers across industries. Submit your resume for a free, honest review from a real recruiter.

You will get specific feedback on what is working, what to fix, and what a recruiter would actually think when they see your application.

Get My Free Resume Review

Read next

Questions to Ask at the End of a Job Interview

Virtual Interview Tips: How to Ace a Video Job Interview

Most Common Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it okay to ask about salary at the end of an interview?

Generally no, especially in an early round.
