class="ez-toc-section-end">

Traditional interview questions like ‘Are you good at working under pressure?’ invite candidates to simply say yes. Behavioral questions, which typically start with ‘Tell me about a time when…’ or ‘Give me an example of…,’ require you to provide specific evidence rather than a self-assessment.

The logic is sound. A candidate who says ‘I am excellent at managing conflict’ has told me something, but a candidate who can describe a specific, complex conflict they navigated, what they did, and what the outcome was has shown me something. Showing is always more persuasive than telling.

Most interviewers are also watching for how you structure your answer: whether you can tell a clear story with a beginning, middle, and end, whether you take appropriate ownership of your role in the situation, and whether your storytelling is concise or rambling.

The STAR method

The STAR method is the standard framework for answering behavioral questions, and it works. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. You briefly describe the situation and your role in it, explain the task or challenge you faced, walk through the specific actions you took, and describe the measurable outcome.

The most common mistake candidates make with STAR is spending too much time on the Situation and not enough on the Action. The situation provides context, but the action is where you demonstrate your competencies. Aim for roughly 20% of your answer on situation and task, and 60 to 70% on your actions, with the remainder on the result.

A good STAR answer takes roughly two to three minutes. Much shorter and you have not given enough evidence. Much longer and you have lost the interviewer’s attention. Practice your stories so you can tell them at the right length naturally.

How to prepare your stories before the interview

Prepare eight to ten STAR stories before any major interview. Cover the most common behavioral themes: leadership, conflict resolution, handling failure, working under pressure, influencing without authority, navigating ambiguity, and your greatest professional achievement.

Each story should be specific and verifiable. Use real names, real situations, real outcomes. Vague or composite stories are harder to tell compellingly and more likely to unravel under follow-up questions.

Organize your stories by theme, not by question. A story about a difficult deadline can answer questions about pressure, prioritization, leadership, and teamwork depending on how you frame it. Versatile stories that can be adapted to different questions are especially valuable.

The most common behavioral questions and what they are looking for

Tell me about a time you faced a significant challenge at work covers resilience, problem-solving, and your attitude toward adversity. They want to see that you do not fall apart under pressure and that you approach obstacles actively rather than passively.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague or manager is testing your ability to navigate conflict professionally. They want to see that you can advocate for a position respectfully, that you are willing to speak up, and that you prioritize the outcome over winning the argument.

Tell me about a time you failed is testing self-awareness and your ability to learn from experience. The right answer owns the failure genuinely without excessive self-criticism, describes what you learned, and ideally describes how you applied that learning in a subsequent situation.

Delivering the answer in the interview

Get to the story quickly. Do not spend the first thirty seconds explaining why this is a good example or how much you have been thinking about this question. Just begin the situation. ‘In my second year at X company, we were about three weeks from a major client deadline when…’ Start in the action.

Speak in the first person and maintain ownership of the actions you took. ‘We decided to…’ is less compelling than ‘I suggested we try…’ You can describe team work, but the interviewer wants to understand specifically what you contributed.

If the interviewer asks a follow-up question, that is a good sign. It means they are engaged and they want more. Follow-up questions are not a signal that your answer was wrong. Answer them honestly and with the same specificity you brought to the original answer.

What to do if you cannot think of a good example

If you are asked for an example and you genuinely cannot think of one that fits exactly, say so briefly and pivot to the closest relevant situation. ‘I have not experienced that exact situation, but a similar challenge I navigated was…’ That is more credible than a stretch example that falls apart under follow-up questions.

You can also use examples from before your career: from school, from volunteer work, from significant personal experiences if they are genuinely relevant. Interviewers generally accept non-work examples, especially for candidates with limited experience, as long as the competency being assessed is clearly demonstrated.

After the interview, add any new example types to your preparation list. The questions you were not ready for are the ones to focus on next time.

Get your free resume review from a real recruiter

All of this advice is based on years of reviewing resumes and working with hiring managers across industries. Submit your resume for a free, honest review from a real recruiter.

You will get specific feedback on what is working, what to fix, and what a recruiter would actually think when they see your application.

Get My Free Resume Review

Read next

How to Prepare for a Behavioral Interview

Most Common Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

How to Prepare for a Case Interview at a Consulting Firm

Frequently Asked Questions

How many STAR stories should I prepare before an interview?

Eight to ten stories covering different themes is a good target.
