look for

Marketing is one of the most data-driven fields it has ever been, and hiring managers know it. When I evaluate a marketing resume, I am looking for specific metrics that demonstrate real impact: CAC, LTV, ROAS, MQL to SQL conversion rates, pipeline influenced, channel ROI, email open and click rates, or whatever the relevant metrics are for the specific specialty.

I am also looking at which channels the candidate has experience with and how deep that experience is. A marketing generalist might know something about everything. A specialist knows everything about one or two things. Neither is inherently better, but what I am hiring for determines which one I need.

I am also watching for whether the candidate can position themselves strategically. A marketing resume that just lists job responsibilities without a clear sense of the candidate’s specialization and value proposition is underperforming. You know how to do this for products and services. Do it for yourself.

How to structure a marketing resume

Open with a strong summary that names your specialty, your level of experience, and your strongest proof point. ‘Performance marketing manager with seven years of experience specializing in paid search and programmatic display. Managed budgets of up to $2M annually and consistently delivered ROAS above 4x.’ That is specific, immediate, and compelling.

Your skills section should emphasize the platforms, tools, and methodologies most relevant to your specialty: Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, HubSpot, Salesforce, Marketo, Tableau, Google Analytics 4, Looker, SEMrush, Klaviyo, and whatever else is genuinely part of your toolkit.

Structure your experience bullets around campaigns, outcomes, and tools. Not ‘responsible for email marketing program’ but ‘owned email marketing channel for 250K subscriber list, growing revenue contribution from email by 40% YoY through segmentation, A/B testing, and lifecycle automation.’

The metrics that matter most by specialty

For demand generation and growth marketing: pipeline generated, MQL volume and quality, cost per MQL, MQL to SQL conversion rate, and campaign ROI. If you do paid media, add ROAS, CPA, and channel-specific metrics.

For content and SEO: organic traffic growth, keyword rankings, domain authority trends, content-driven lead volume, and any metrics around content engagement or conversion. Quantify your output as well: articles published per month, videos produced, and the audience size you have managed.

For brand and communications: reach, share of voice, media placements, earned media value, or brand lift metrics if you have them. For social media: follower growth, engagement rate, organic reach, and any social-to-conversion metrics. For email specifically: list size, open rates, click rates, conversion rates, and unsubscribe rates relative to industry benchmarks.

Showing strategic thinking on a marketing resume

The strongest marketing candidates I hire can demonstrate not just execution but strategic thinking. That means showing that you did not just run campaigns, you designed them. That you did not just report on metrics, you used them to make decisions that changed direction.

Bullets that show strategic thinking often have a clear before-and-after structure: ‘Identified that our highest-converting segment was being underserved in our email program, built a new series targeting that segment, and generated $800K in incremental revenue within six months.’ That bullet shows analysis, decision-making, and execution all in one.

You can also show strategic thinking through the scope of what you have owned. Managing a full marketing function, building a channel from scratch, or leading a cross-functional rebrand all suggest higher-order involvement than executing someone else’s playbook.

Portfolio and work samples for marketing candidates

Marketing is a field where showing your work is possible and valuable. A portfolio that includes campaign examples, creative samples, data visualizations you have built, or case studies of successful campaigns can meaningfully supplement your resume.

Not every marketing role requires a portfolio, but for roles involving creative execution, content, brand, or design, having examples of your work is a significant advantage. Many candidates include a brief portfolio link in their resume header.

If you share samples of work done at previous employers, be mindful of confidentiality. Sharing proprietary campaign data, customer lists, or internal competitive intelligence is inappropriate and potentially illegal. Focus on public-facing work and share internal metrics only in aggregate or with identifying details removed.

Common marketing resume mistakes

The biggest mistake is claiming marketing skills without demonstrating marketing effectiveness. A resume full of ‘managed social media presence’ and ‘supported email campaigns’ with no metrics is a red flag in a field where measurement is fundamental.

Another common mistake is trying to appear like a generalist when the role is clearly looking for a specialist. If the job description emphasizes paid media expertise and your resume presents you as someone who does a little of everything, you will not stand out.

Also watch for chronological marketing resume structures that do not clearly surface your specialty. If someone has to read three job descriptions to understand that you are primarily a demand gen marketer, your resume needs editing. Your specialty should be clear from the first sentence.

Get your free resume review from a real recruiter

All of this advice is based on years of reviewing resumes and working with hiring managers across industries. Submit your resume for a free, honest review from a real recruiter.

You will get specific feedback on what is working, what to fix, and what a recruiter would actually think when they see your application.

Get My Free Resume Review

Read next

Nurse Resume Guide: How to Write One That Gets You Hired

Teacher Resume Guide: How to Write One That Gets You Hired

Nurse Resume Guide: How to Write a Resume That Gets RN Interviews

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I include a portfolio with my marketing resume?

Yes, if you have work samples worth showing.
