typically include

Relocation packages vary widely by company size, the level of the role, and the distance of the move. Small companies may offer a flat lump sum of $3,000 to $10,000. Large companies and senior roles may include full household moving expense coverage, temporary housing, trips to house-hunt, spousal job search assistance, and sometimes storage fees or lease-breaking penalties.

Understanding what a full relocation package looks like before you have the conversation helps you identify what to ask for if the initial offer is thin. Common components: moving expenses (professional movers or truck rental), travel costs for the move itself, temporary housing for 30 to 90 days, house-hunting trips, and a lump sum for incidental costs.

Tax gross-up provisions are worth asking about. Relocation allowances are typically taxable income, and a company that grosses up the payment so you receive the full intended amount after taxes is offering something meaningfully more valuable than one that does not.

How to evaluate what you actually need

Before you negotiate, calculate what your relocation will actually cost. Get a moving quote for the distance and the volume of your belongings. Research housing markets in the new location. Identify any lease penalties you will incur at your current residence. Factor in deposits, utility setup, and any other one-time costs.

Also account for the disruption to other household income if you have a partner who will be giving up a job or a business. Spousal career disruption is a real and often uncompensated cost of relocation that is worth explicitly raising if it applies to your situation.

Having a real number in mind gives you an anchor for the negotiation. ‘Based on a quote I received, the move itself will cost approximately $8,000, and with first and last month’s rent and other setup costs, I am looking at a total of around $15,000 in relocation expenses’ is a credible, specific framing.

How to ask for more

The right moment to raise relocation is when you are negotiating the full offer package, typically after you have received a written offer. If the initial offer includes a relocation package that you feel is insufficient, you can raise it directly and specifically.

Something like: ‘I am very excited about this opportunity and I want to accept. I did want to discuss the relocation assistance, because I have calculated that my actual relocation costs will be approximately $X. Would it be possible to increase the relocation allowance to cover those expenses?’

That framing is specific, reasonable, and collaborative. It is not a demand or a threat. It is a genuine conversation about how to make the transition work. Most employers who want you enough to relocate you are also willing to have this conversation reasonably.

Lump sum vs. full service relocation

Some companies offer a choice between a lump sum and coordinated full-service relocation. Full-service relocation, where the company’s relocation firm manages all of the logistics and pays vendors directly, reduces your administrative burden but sometimes limits your control over the process.

A lump sum gives you flexibility to apply the money however makes sense for your move, but you are responsible for all coordination and any cost overruns come out of your pocket. For larger moves or complicated situations, a lump sum that underestimates actual costs can leave you out of pocket.

If given a choice, evaluate the lump sum amount against your actual cost estimate. If the lump sum covers your projected costs with some buffer, it may give you more flexibility than a managed process. If it does not cover your costs, the full-service option might ultimately be more protective.

Negotiating when there is no package offered

Some companies, particularly smaller ones or those in markets where they receive candidates who want to relocate, do not automatically offer relocation assistance. The absence of an offer does not mean the benefit is unavailable.

Ask directly and early: ‘Is relocation assistance available for this role?’ If the answer is no, follow up with: ‘I would need to relocate from X. Given that, would you be open to discussing a relocation allowance? I could share what I estimate my actual costs to be.’ Most reasonable employers will at least have the conversation.

If they genuinely cannot offer relocation assistance, that is relevant information for your decision. The cost of relocating without assistance should factor into your evaluation of the total compensation package, and it is legitimate to reflect that in your overall negotiation.

Timeline and logistics for relocation

Negotiate not just the money but the timeline. When do they need you to start? How much time do you need to handle the relocation? Most companies will grant 30 days for a local move and 60 to 90 days for an international or complex cross-country relocation.

If the timeline they propose is too tight for your situation, say so specifically. ‘My current lease runs through X, which creates a conflict with the proposed start date of Y. Would it be possible to start on Z instead?’ Most companies prefer a candidate who plans carefully to one who rushes and arrives stressed and unprepared.

Also clarify the logistics of the reimbursement process. Will you be reimbursed after the move, or will expenses be paid in advance? Will you receive a lump sum upfront or submit receipts? Understanding the process prevents unpleasant surprises.

Get your free resume review from a real recruiter

All of this advice is based on years of reviewing resumes and working with hiring managers across industries. Employers who want you to move want to make the transition work.

What if the company does not have a formal relocation policy?

Ask anyway. Smaller companies often handle relocation on a case-by-case basis and can be flexible when they have not formalized the benefit. A reasonable, specific request is usually met with a reasonable discussion.

Do I have to pay back relocation assistance if I leave early?

Often yes. Many relocation agreements include a repayment clause requiring you to reimburse some or all of the relocation costs if you leave within a defined period, typically 12 to 24 months. Read the agreement carefully before signing.

Can I negotiate relocation for an international move?

Yes, and the stakes are higher for international moves.
