HR specialists who screen federal resumes are looking for very specific evidence that you meet the qualifications listed in the job announcement, known as the Occupational Questionnaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal resumes are intentionally long. A two-page resume is considered too brief. Experienced federal employees often submit resumes of five to eight pages or longer. The length is not padding. It is necessary to demonstrate you meet specific experience requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every statement you make on a federal resume should be supported by specific details. The federal system runs on verification. Treat it as your blueprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay close attention to the &#8216;Specialized Experience&#8217; section. This spells out exactly what experience is required at your grade level. Your resume must explicitly address each requirement using similar language to show you qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many federal positions use a system called USAJOBS. Make sure your resume is uploaded or built inside USAJOBS if the announcement requires it. Some agencies have their own application portals, so follow the instructions precisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Include_all_required_elements\"><\/span>Include all required elements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal resumes must include your full legal name, contact information, country of citizenship, and your Social Security Number in some cases. Each job entry must include the employer name, supervisor name and contact information, number of hours worked per week, salary, and a detailed description of duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not assume any detail is too small. If you worked 40 hours per week, say so. If your supervisor was Jane Smith at 555-123-4567, include it. Omitting required fields can result in your application being rated ineligible regardless of your actual qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Include your GS grade level if you are currently a federal employee. Challenge describes what you were trying to solve or accomplish. Action explains specifically what you did, in enough detail that an evaluator can assess the complexity. Result quantifies the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the resume itself, you do not need to write every bullet in full CCAR format, but the more detailed and structured your accomplishments are, the better your chances of receiving a high rating in the evaluation phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Translate_private_sector_experience_into_federal_terms\"><\/span>Translate private sector experience into federal terms<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are coming from the private sector, your experience is valid, but you need to translate it into language that federal HR specialists understand. Look up the qualifications for your target GS series and grade, then map your experience explicitly to those criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if a GS-13 position in IT security requires experience with system authorization under FISMA, and you have done something equivalent in a private firm under different terminology, you need to name what you did in terms the evaluator can connect to FISMA requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This translation work is one of the most important things you can do to improve your federal application. Even after submitting, it is common to wait six to twelve weeks or longer before receiving any response.
