it

The instinct to hide an employment gap often backfires. Employers will see the gap in your dates regardless of how you format your resume. What they are assessing is how you handle it. Honesty combined with a clear narrative is always better than evasion.

If you took time off to care for a family member, manage a health issue, pursue education, or simply take a break, say so. Most modern employers have encountered these situations and understand them. What makes them uncomfortable is candidates who seem evasive or cannot explain the gap coherently.

The key is framing. ‘I left my role to provide care for a parent during a serious illness and returned to work six months later’ is a complete and credible explanation. ‘I had some personal issues to deal with’ is vague and raises more questions than it answers.

Format your resume to minimize visual impact

Use years only rather than months and years for your employment dates if your gap is less than 12 months. ‘2021-2023’ with no months listed does not immediately reveal a four-month gap the way ‘February 2021 – June 2022’ does.

If you did any freelance work, consulting, volunteering, or continuing education during the gap, list it on your resume in the appropriate section. This fills the time period with visible activity even if the work was not traditional employment.

A functional resume format, which leads with skills rather than chronological work history, is sometimes recommended for candidates with gaps. However, many recruiters and ATS systems dislike functional resumes because they can seem evasive. Use this format with caution.

Explain gaps proactively in your cover letter

If you are writing a cover letter, use one sentence to address a significant gap directly. Something like ‘After leaving my role at Company X in 2022 to manage a family health situation, I returned to work part-time in early 2023 and have been actively seeking full-time opportunities since mid-2023’ is clear and preemptive.

Do not spend more than a sentence or two on the explanation. The goal is to raise and dismiss the concern, not to make the gap the central story of your cover letter. Your qualifications should still take center stage.

If the gap is very short, under three months, it may not need any explanation at all. Brief gaps between jobs are common and rarely warrant detailed explanation.

Prepare for the interview question

Every employer who sees a gap will ask about it in an interview. Prepare a clear, confident, two-sentence answer that explains the gap and pivots quickly to what you have done since and why you are excited about this particular role.

Practice saying your explanation out loud until it sounds natural and unapologetic. A gap that you explain with confidence and then pivot away from quickly is one that a hiring manager will forget by the end of the interview.

The follow-up question is often ‘How did you stay current during that time?’ Be ready to answer this with specifics: courses, certifications, freelance projects, industry reading, or professional network activity.

Demonstrate what you did during the gap

Even if you were not employed, there may be things you did during the gap that demonstrate professional relevance. Online courses, bootcamp credentials, freelance projects, open source contributions, volunteer leadership, and industry certifications all count.

If you did not do any of these things during the gap, that is okay. Not every gap needs to be a period of personal growth and professional development. But be honest in interviews about what you did and focus on what makes you the right person for the role now.

The gap is a fact. Your qualifications, skills, and enthusiasm for the role are what determine whether you get hired. A well-handled gap rarely disqualifies a genuinely strong candidate.

Know which gaps matter more than others

Recent gaps, especially those in the past one to two years, get more scrutiny than older gaps. A 2019 gap that has been followed by two solid jobs is nearly invisible. A gap that started in 2023 and is ongoing in 2025 will require a clear explanation.

Industry-specific concerns vary. Gaps in technology roles may raise questions about whether skills have become outdated. Gaps in healthcare or education may trigger questions about licensing requirements. Know your industry’s norms and prepare accordingly.

Gaps caused by layoffs are the easiest to explain and least stigmatizing. If you were laid off as part of a reduction in force, say so clearly. Most hiring managers understand that layoffs are business decisions, not performance judgments.

Read next

How to Handle Employment Gaps on Your Resume

Sales Resume Guide: How to Write a Resume That Proves You Can Close

Nurse Resume Guide: How to Write a Resume That Gets RN Interviews

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a recruiter spend looking at a resume?

Recruiters typically spend 6-10 seconds on an initial scan.
