tech

Technical hiring often starts with keyword scanning for specific technologies. Your skills section needs to be comprehensive, organized, and honest. List every language, framework, tool, platform, and methodology you can work with professionally, organized into logical groupings.

Organize your skills by category: programming languages, frameworks and libraries, databases, cloud platforms, DevOps tools, methodologies. This makes it easy for recruiters to quickly confirm you have the specific skills they need.

Be honest about your proficiency level. If a job requires extensive Python experience and you only did a few tutorials, saying you know Python will create problems in interviews. Many tech companies include technical assessments, and overstating your skills leads to failing tests or awkward interview moments.

Show your projects, not just your jobs

For software engineers and developers, personal projects, open source contributions, and side work often demonstrate capability more effectively than job descriptions. If you have built something on your own time that shows technical skill, it belongs on your resume.

For each project, include a brief description of what it is, what technologies you used, and what you accomplished. Link to the GitHub repository, a live demo, or any other way the reader can verify the work themselves.

Open source contributions are especially compelling because they are publicly verifiable and demonstrate that other developers found your code worthy of merging. Even small contributions to well-known projects carry weight.

Quantify technical impact, not just technical activity

Technical resumes often describe technical work without connecting it to business or user impact. ‘Built API endpoints’ is a duty. ‘Built REST API endpoints that reduced mobile app load time by 40 percent, improving user session length by 18 percent’ is an achievement.

Performance improvements, scalability gains, cost reductions, reliability improvements, time-to-market reductions, and user experience improvements are all ways to quantify the impact of technical work.

If you do not have access to metrics, describe the scale of the system you worked on: ‘Built features for a platform serving 500,000 monthly active users’ gives context even without a specific outcome metric.

Education and certifications for tech roles

A computer science degree from a top university is still a strong credential in some companies, but it is far from the only path into software engineering. Bootcamp graduates, self-taught developers, and candidates from related fields have successfully entered tech roles with the right skills and portfolio.

Cloud certifications, especially AWS, GCP, and Azure certifications, are increasingly recognized and valued. Security certifications like CISSP, CEH, or CompTIA Security+ are important for security-focused roles. Data-related certifications from Databricks, Snowflake, or Google are gaining recognition.

List certifications with their full formal names and the issuing organization. Include the date you obtained them. For certifications that expire, note the expiration date to signal that you are actively maintaining your credentials.

Length and format for tech resumes

Senior engineers and technical leaders often have resumes that run to two pages, which is appropriate given the breadth of their technical experience, certifications, and project work. For engineers with fewer than five years of experience, a one-page resume is generally expected.

Many tech companies use ATS systems, but technical hiring managers also often review resumes directly. Format for both: clean enough for ATS parsing and clear enough for a technical reader to quickly identify your stack and experience level.

PDF is generally preferred for tech resumes unless specifically asked for another format. GitHub links, portfolio links, and personal website links belong in your header alongside your email and phone number. Make them clickable.

Prepare for the technical screening

Your resume creates the first impression, but a technical interview or coding assessment comes next. The skills you list and the projects you describe will be the starting point for technical questions.

Only list technologies you are comfortable being interviewed on. If you used React two years ago and have not touched it since, listing it invites questions you may struggle to answer. The same is true for algorithms, system design concepts, and architectural patterns.

Your resume is also a script for the interview narrative. Know every accomplishment and project you listed well enough to discuss it in depth, including the trade-offs you made, the challenges you faced, and the things you would do differently in retrospect.

Read next

How to Write a Resume for a Promotion Interview

How to Update Your Resume After Years at One Company

Sales Resume Guide: How to Write a Resume That Proves You Can Close

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a recruiter spend looking at a resume?

Recruiters typically spend 6-10 seconds on an initial scan.
