It is evidence that you have used relevant knowledge to produce a result. Read the job description and identify the three responsibilities most likely to determine success. Prepare one example for each.

If the role requires stakeholder management, naming “communication” in a skills section is weak evidence. Explaining how you aligned legal, sales and operations around a delayed launch is stronger.

Clarity: can people understand your contribution?

Candidates often lose credit because their answers bury the point. They describe the company, the team and the challenge but never explain what they personally did.

Use a simple order: context, responsibility, action and result. Keep the context short. If an interviewer has to ask, “What was your role in that?” the answer needs clearer ownership.

Credibility: does the evidence hold together?

Credibility grows when dates, scope and claims are consistent across the resume, LinkedIn profile and interview. It also grows when a candidate can discuss tradeoffs and mistakes without turning them into disguised triumphs.

Do not inflate a team result into an individual achievement. Say what the team accomplished and what you owned. Specificity is more persuasive than oversized language.

Compatibility: can this person succeed in this environment?

“Culture fit” can become vague or biased when it means hiring people who resemble the existing team. A better question is whether the candidate can work effectively under the actual conditions of the role.

Ask about decision-making, feedback, pace and collaboration. Then provide examples that show how you operate in comparable situations. Compatibility is mutual: you are also deciding whether the manager and environment will let you do good work.

Commitment: why this job, now?

Commitment does not mean promising to stay forever. It means showing that the move makes sense. Connect the role to work you want to do, problems you are equipped to solve and conditions you have deliberately chosen.

“Your company is an industry leader” could be sent anywhere. “The role combines hospital operations with the scheduling work I led across four clinics” gives the employer a reason to believe your interest is specific.

Use the five questions before an interview

Competence: Which three examples prove I can handle the core work?

Clarity: Can I explain each example in under two minutes?

Credibility: Are the facts consistent and can I support every claim?

Compatibility: What conditions help me perform, and what do I need to learn about this team?

Commitment: Why is this role a sensible next step for me?

This checklist cannot predict every decision.
