Using ChatGPT during a job search is not automatically dishonest, and avoiding it does not automatically produce a strong application. Recruiters care about the finished material: Is it accurate? Is it specific? Does the candidate understand the role? Can they discuss every claim in an interview?
The problem begins when a writing tool becomes an autobiography tool.
Use it to question your draft
A blank prompt such as “write my cover letter” encourages a generic result. Give the tool a real draft, the job description and a narrow task. Ask it to find vague sentences, repeated ideas or requirements you have not addressed. Tell it not to add facts.
For example: “Identify the three most generic claims in this resume summary. For each one, ask me a question that would produce evidence. Do not rewrite until I answer.” This keeps you in control of the substance.
Never let the tool supply your evidence
Models can produce reasonable-sounding metrics, software names and responsibilities. “Reasonable-sounding” is precisely what makes invented details dangerous. Verify every number, date, title and tool against your own records.
If the draft says you “led a cross-functional transformation,” be prepared to explain who was involved, what changed and what you personally did. If those answers are not clear, the phrase should not be there.
Replace polish with specificity
AI-heavy applications often contain smooth sentences with no friction and no memorable evidence. Compare:
Generic: “Results-driven leader with a proven track record of optimizing processes and collaborating with stakeholders.”
Specific: “Operations manager who redesigned weekend staffing across four clinics, reducing average patient wait time from 38 to 24 minutes.”
The second version is not better because it uses a clever verb. It is better because a recruiter can evaluate it and ask a follow-up question.
Read the final version aloud
If you would never say a sentence in conversation, change it. Watch for words you do not normally use, excessive enthusiasm and claims that sound grander than the underlying work. Vary sentence length naturally. Remove the introductory paragraph that merely repeats the job title and company name.
Ask someone who knows you to read the cover letter without telling them which sections received help. Their first reaction is more useful than an AI-detection score. Detection tools can be wrong; a human reader can tell you whether the document sounds like you.
Know when assistance crosses a line
Polishing your own resume is different from having a tool complete a writing test, case exercise or technical assessment that is meant to measure your unaided work. Follow the employer’s instructions. When tool use is prohibited or disclosure is required, the rule is part of the assessment.
Do not paste confidential employer information, client details or personal identifiers into a service without understanding its current data practices.
A safer workflow
- Write the facts and rough examples yourself.
- Ask the tool to identify gaps and unclear wording.
- Answer questions with real details.
- Edit the result into your normal voice.
- Verify every claim against your records.
- Tailor the final document to the actual role.
ChatGPT can help you see and edit your experience. It should not manufacture the experience, decide what you believe or remove every trace of personality. A strong application still sounds like a person who knows what they did and why it matters.

Privacy note: what we store and how to erase it
What we store: your email address, the choices above, and timestamps (signed up, confirmed, last sent). Nothing else about you.
What our mail provider records: whether you opened an email and which links you followed, tied to your address. That is Brevo, the service that delivers these emails, and it works by adding a small invisible image and by routing links through its own address. We read it to see which sections people use. Unsubscribing stops the sending and the measuring at the same time, and erasing your row removes it from our side.
The confirmation email is measured too: the same invisible image is in the one message that asks your permission. If you open it, Brevo records that against your address before you have agreed to anything, and it records it even if you then never confirm. We would exempt that message if we could. Brevo offers no way to switch its measuring off for a single email, and the one setting that exists covers every email we send or none of them. If you would rather not be measured at all, do not open it. Nothing else is ever sent to an unconfirmed address, and the signup is deleted from our side after 30 days.
About the links: links in the digest pass through a counter on this site that adds 1 to a total for that link and sends you straight on. It records no identifier, no IP address and no browser details, so it counts how many times a link was followed and can never say who followed it.
What it is used for: sending you exactly the emails you ticked, nothing else. The address is never shared, sold, or used for any other purpose.
How to erase it: click the unsubscribe link in any email. That stops all sending immediately, and unsubscribed addresses, along with signups that were never confirmed, are hard-deleted automatically after 30 days. You can also ask via the contact page.
